So i eventually got around to fixing the forum. It was running a test version of MyTwitterBB that wasn't working properly. I have just removed the plugin since i do not have time to fix the bug properly. Speaking of not having time:

I have now finished the first version of Supa Blogg, it's not available to anyone to use right now as I'm testing it after coding and everyone who codes knows how many first time bugs they find when they test a program for the first time. I do not unit test with large programs, i would rather code in the flow of it and then bug test in one go. It means that everything is kept going and im not breaking flow to see whether it's showing the right time or not. I am continuing to test Supa Blogg and i hope to have it running my personal blog very soon. It won't be out for Public use until after i have released the new Supa Comix website later this year (hopefully).

MyTwitterBB Version 2.5 has not had anything done to it just yet. I have started University and i have to do that, SupaBlogg and the Survivors Diary so getting things done is a slow process right now. I have so many things that i want to do but cannot do alot of them because i have to prioritise what I'm working on. I was just making a post to make sure that you did not think that we were dead or anything.

I do not know what's happening with Is it Because I'm Green or Virtually Reality, Adele has also started uni and has more work than me so she's also very busy. But from what i've seen the scripts for Season 1 of IIBIG are coming along nicely.

So after the long period of no posting information, or news or anything on this page i come bearing loads of new information.

Firstly, the Supa Comix website is still coming along nicely, i am working on the blogging platform first. This will be installed first on the new website and it will be the home of my blog where i can test it quite extensivley and continously whenever i upgrade it. I will release more information about it once its done, but before its ready for release. I do not expect Supa Kode to be ready for release until after the new website has come out due to the fact that the major testing of that code will be done with the new website.

MyTwitterBB is going into its next revision, i have been working on some better ways to read XML files and fetching their data and i have found a way to do it i just need to do some more coding around it and add in some more features before i release it.

MyWikiBB has had some more ideas done for it but i have not done anything to that.

The Survivors Diary Community has just had a portal page installed meaning that everything that happens in the community can now be found within one singular place. Including some new content. We have also chosen to move the podcasts release date to biweekly.

Other projects such as Gal X, Zombie Stress 2 etc are remaining uncompleted right now. There is a lot to complete and what we want to do has to be prioritised so the projects such as Gal X and Zombie Stress 2 have to be put on hold.

Watchmen: the movie review.

I have never had the opportunity to read the watchmen graphic novel (by alan moore) , but after having the opportunity to see the film twice in the cinema I was intrigued and captivated by its grimy charm.
So, if you haven’t read the novel and are interested in seeing the film anyway I hope my review is of some help.
This film did not disappoint me in the slightest; it was tastefully distasteful and charmingly seedy. It is set in an alternative 1980’s America where the Vietnam War was not the biggest humiliation in American history (next to George bush) thanks to the god like Dr Manhattan, and where the world faces possible nuclear Armageddon.
The story is about retired masked vigilantes and their equally retired (crazy or dead) predecessors, taking a true look at the faces behind the masks.
The portrayal of the characters contradicts typical ideas of superheroes and humanises them, making them more relatable I found this captivate me most.

The opening credits provided a well sequenced prelude to the story and its context. With the combination of nostalgia and the well placed Bob Dylan song “times are a’changing” I literally had Goosebumps on my arm… but then again I’m a sucker for a tasteful piece of art direction.
The entire music selection was fairly cliché, but it fit incredibly well and pushed both a humorous and nostalgic feeling.

Personally I only felt a few downsides, one of them being the length, but we have to accept that intellectually and graphically charismatic films like this work better with length as they have a lot more to say. Unfortunately though this meant a lot of scenes had to drag a little.
The main downside about the film I found more than anything was other people’s reactions towards it. After seeing it, I couldn’t help but overhear most the people at the cinema saying how awful it was. (Granted I had that when I went to see the dark knight, but that was a conversation actually during the film… right next to me…) so really, in their attempt to make the transition from book to film one that could be seen and enjoyed by people who hadn’t even heard of the book, they partially failed. But you shouldn’t let this deter you from seeing it, because as I previously mentioned, I haven’t read the novel either but I entered the cinema with an open mind and was prepared for anything.

There are no big name celebs starring in this film, which wasn’t the end of the world. The acting was bearable and fit well with the style. The worse piece of acting was delivered by Malin Akerman (silk spectre) which was unfortunate as she played quite a significant character. But, on the bright side, Jackie Earle Haley’s portrayal of Rorschach was one of the many pros about this film because…well… he was just plain bad ass with and without his mask on.

Many people have claimed the violence, nudity and sex to be purely gratuitous and a way of making up the age rating, but my opinion is completely the opposite.
Firstly, the gore and violence was mostly in context with portraying the nature of the characters and the seedy, torn world in which they live in.
Secondly was the nudity. Dr Manhattan and his full frontal nudity is subtle and also done in good taste, admittedly I found myself focusing on and around that area often but it was quite impressively large. I think people complaining about it being there is slightly absurd though, mostly because it wasn’t really suggestive. It was done in a way that’s like “ok… He is a man and he has a penis”. is a man having a penis offensive? Just ask any priceless work of art depicting a naked man.
(This part may contain some spoilers, but was fairly predictable during the watching of the film anyway, just not to the amount of detail expected)
Thirdly, the sex is also in context and is no way gratuitous as most scenes symbolise or lead onto another part of the story. The first glimpse at a sex scene is Laurie (silk spectre) and two Dr Manhattans which is a lot more hyped up than what actually happens, is also short lived and you can see the relevance when you watch it. The main scene which has raised the eyebrows of controversy and the one that particularly made people squirm in their seats and grin at their friends was the one between Dan (night owl) and Laurie (silk spectre) in Archie (the owl ship thing). This was on par with soft porn, it goes into more detail than I have ever seen in a film before but it was very tastefully done. As for some complaints about the music not fitting or being distracting… well I personally think it worked humour into the scene and it was only distracting if you were planning on jacking off right there and then.

Overall, with its cliché quips, psychological hooks and 80s style, I found watchmen to be a humorous, deep yet seedy alternative to the bullet proof superhero genre. Admittedly it was quite cheesy, but if you like superhero films you’ll notice the cheesy superhero clichés are to parody and contradict the typical superhero.
So, Even if you haven’t read the novel its well worth the watch as long as you keep an open mind. Don’t watch and expect a whole lot of action, what little action there is, is quite well done but if that’s all you go to see then you’ll be disappointed. (If you go for the sex however, I think you’ll be very delighted)
It’s defiantly a film you can see more than once and the second time you watch it opens you up to many things you had previously overlooked. Being so different to anything else I’ve seen in recent years I personally think watchmen has the potential to be one of those timeless classics we will continue to enjoy for a long time.

If you like 80s films, nostalgia, superhero clichés, soft porn, blue radioactive men, big guns, subtle cheesy humour or set breaking fight scenes then you’ll love this film. Just don’t watch it with a parent…

D.I.P.R.I.P Warm-up (From now on referred to as DIPRIP) was not really a mod that I had really taken an active interest in, it was like one of those films that are at the cinema that you wouldn’t pay to see but it was on television you’d watch it if there was nothing better on, but then it turned out that you should have seen it in its glory at the cinema. This mod is just like that, a mod that I only installed as I had nothing else to really play at that time and I felt like something new.

I fired up the newly installed game and was surprised by how different it was to anything else I’d played as a mod.

I started my own server just to get used to the controls, which were very usefully explained as part of the loading process and drove around blowing up haystacks.

The game responded quickly and the car/tank thing drove like the vehicles in half life 2, use the mouse to look and you steer with the controls. This takes some getting used to, as in HL2 I was unable to shoot behind me and maintain a decent driving direction and thus during actual online game play found that I would run headfirst into either a pond or a wall whilst my enemy looped around my and shoved missiles into the sides of my helpless jeep.

But that’s okay, that’s part of a game like this and that’s what makes the game so brilliant. It’s not a game based on a desperately elaborate story line that requires you to unlock puzzles or follow a tutorial to get into it. It has no single player and with the basic tips and tricks coming as part of the loading screen it’s essentially a get-stuck-in game.

And it was the best modification I’ve played… ever. It took me back to the good old days of Quake 3 Arena when you just joined a server grabbed a gun and then shot your enemy into tiny pieces to have them respawn and do that to you and thus have that blissful cycle continue for several hours before your eyes start to bleed. And this was exactly the same type of game, I could have played this for hours if it wasn’t for the fact that I felt like it was slowly sanding down my eyes.

The game uses the graphics style of the HL2 engine which is a very detailed backdrop and amazing graphic styles, but then it also has highly complex and badass looking tank-mobiles which from a distance blend quite easily into the background. I was unsure whether that very detailed blob in the distance was an incoming death car or the beginning of a seizure.

There are 4 ninja cars in this picture... find them.

And this would be the only defining part of the mod that I think needs work, Mario kart had some simple maps with some easy to see cars (nothing to do with the fact that they had giant people pushed up inside them), whilst quakes players were easily see able from the texture line up due to their awesome yet pointless outfits. Now if the actual cars had something more pick-out-able from the rest of the map then that would be perfect, perhaps making them a slightly lighter colour or perhaps decreasing the level of detail within either the cars or the map, making them easier to see.

Other then that there is also the point that at the point of this review there were 3 cars which were playable, all of which had a different thing, one was stronger but slower and the other was faster but weaker, the usual cliché style of basic classes within games. But it didn’t really matter to the game play, if someone comes screaming at you with 3 rockets already mid-flight and the other one already having dinner with your colon its not really going to make a difference whether you are the heavy tank or the light go kart. You will be blown into thousands of giblets.

This is not a massive problem with the game its just something I’ve picked up on and perhaps doesn’t really need any work. The different cars look cool and that’s what really matters in the end. You didn’t pick Sarge because he was a soldier, you picked Anarchi because he was on a hover-board or hunter because between her gun and her headdress not much else was left to the imagination. The cars look awesome but if you’re going to make difference game-wise to them perhaps make them a bit more see able. TF2 is a good example of visual differences between classes as you can tell them from the backdrop as well as easily tell which class it is just from its basic outline.

Overall the game is fun, its simple and brutal, the graphics are good, the explosions are awesome, the weapons are clever. It’s the perfect SETTMPS (Shoot Every thing that moves person shooter) for those who don’t want tactics or thirty buttons to tie your shoelaces. It’s a game for just pure un-censored fun, it even has Arnie as the in-game announcer.

I was one of the hundreds of people who were blown away by Portal, another ingenious game from the Valve Gods of Gaming. And thus everything Portal created via the community would never live up to it as it would be a terrible attempt to be on that level of deity.

This valved man strangly looks like some kind of religious icon...

But i was browsing Moddb, for nothing in particular just browsing through its haphazard navigation system when i actually found something without actually looking for it. (Ironically the only way to find something on the website). Portal Prelude, the game that would come before Portal Prelude. At once i clicked a button and was ready for its updates, i didn't have long to wait as it came out and i spent the next 3 hours downloading it.

Then i installed it and then went camping for the weekend. However on return i managed to actually play the single player mod. I am impressed by it, it has a whole new take on the Portal Universe and has a whole load of interesting and different puzzles of which to solve. The levels were very well made, with some excellent set design even to the point that i kept getting that OS Pages Poll memory low error and a crash out of it all. It's like my computer was blown away by its high tech design and complicated puzzles.

The voice of entertainment is two people who i assume are the voices you can get windows to simulate via one its pointless programmes. Which were not really funny though I think a couple of lines sparked a bit of a smile but nothing on the same lines as GlaDOS.

Though that is as far as this mod really goes, the puzzles are somewhat impossible for me to figure out that I had to noclip around the map to figure it out properly. But the main problem here is that I am slightly lazy and that unlike portal the entire elements of the problem are not visible to the user. A lot of the problems are hidden away behind moving walls which do not seem to be very productive towards the completion of the puzzle. I think that although they may be drastically obvious to the designers or they either require the user to have an insane ability to figure out the problem within 5 seconds so as not to fall to that green water death. With all of the awesomeness of this mod including its cut scenes, animation and effects the puzzles, for which portal is based, is what will lose it a lot of its players. Portal was tough at some parts but doable when you could see everything that was required for the puzzle, even the last tests had that.

All of the original cast are present in this mod...

I also found that I spent a lot of time standing around waiting for dialogue to be completed without being able to ride a lift expecting another puzzle or just do something whilst two characters chat to each other whilst you stand in a corridor where little is happening.

The mod was not really fun, I noclipped through some puzzles just because I got fed up of trying to do them and wanted to get to some more story. The end story and the lead up to Portal is a lot of awesome stuff which is impressive with some effects that I would not have expected to see in such a mod.

With its bugs and challenges the mod hardly has the wick to hold a candle to Portal and with all of its good points it still falls short.

With an impressive performance in the film ‘I am Legend’ I thought that I’d see another one of the Fresh Prince’s films named Hancock. This super-hero(ish) film was from the start setting itself apart from the geek-go-lucky-american-dream style super heroes that we had all got used to.

The film must have been good as it kept my attention throughout it and rarely did I start to wonder about what I’d be doing afterwards involving my eyeballs and a ball of acid, like I do with a lot of other films. But this film was nothing like that, it had wit, humour, a Flying Under the Influence Super hero and that main character from arrested development.

Thankfully it didn’t revolve around the typical idea of someone causing a mass of problems as he was created to be equal to the main villain as per usual. Hancock does not have a nemesis per say, sure he has people who he fights but their not evil villains with dramatic voice tones and beards pointy enough to deflate the balloon of poisonous gas they’re using to destroy the world. There was one character that did pop up and was bad but they didn’t really do very much and most of their fighting Hancock was just good timing on their part.

I won’t be explaining the story as its quite good and keeps you immense. The effects were good, even the effect of flying was quite realistic in a sense. The acting was not bad but not impressive and Will Smith has not lost my interest by doing something bad. He did a good act and played the part well.

I have every little bad to say about this film. Those who love Superman films may say otherwise but they’re probably people who cannot stand a super hero who stops a car filled with gun wielding maniacs whilst swigging from a whisky bottle. The film stood out and twisted the typical plot development of other super hero films. It even followed the principles of the fairy tale story set out my Joseph Campbell.

Son Of Rambow

This copyright dodging independent film is not actually a continuation of the Rambo series. It is a film about two boys making a movie, the conflict? One of the boys is a member of “The Brethren” religious group, meaning that he cannot watch television (even though he does anyway). The other boy lives in a care home, but he’s part of a really rich family, he just smokes and causes a lot of trouble and is the director of the film.

Now I would have thought that the film may be a bit preachy about religion or something but entirely it wasn’t. It didn’t have a strong theme dictating some point of view, the only real thing that was really passed across under the film was a kind of “you know who your real friends are” type thing. This isn’t really over done or pushed within the film meaning that it’s not too sickly.

Now despite the actual film idea behind the film which is where the Brethren boy is the Son of Rambow who is trying to save him from capture or something the film is inspiringly original. It does not do what other independent films do which is preach some story and it has a good little chuckle humour which I think a lot of people can enjoy (at least over the age of 12).

The story was interesting and kept you interested, there were points where you could start to wonder if that was cheese you smelt but those moments were not pushed or over done. They were done to the level which kept the story going and then it moved on to the next scene. It not dissuade the story or make it hurry along, it followed a good time style and nothing was dragged out or two short.

It’s a professional independent film, there isn’t really too much to critic it in the way of how it looks. I have read other reviews of the film and it compared it to The History Boys, which I think is an absurd comparison, Son of Rambow is much better. Others said it had too many sub plots but I thought it was cute in a film sense of the word. It was an awesome film and I struggle to find a problem with it.

For this I give it:
For this I give it:

A confusing title for a mod but still I downloaded it to see what it was like. And I was very surprised by this modification, it had some neat things but most of all it brought something from Half Life : Opposing Force that I never thought I’d see again. The Barnacle, this is essentially those barnacle things that hang from the ceilings in, grapple hook form. A very impressive tool and adds a few fun tasks to do with the opening areas of the modification.

But don’t let this fun little thing about the map fool you, other then a rocket turret and a bonus map to do with the barnacle gun there is very little else to this modification. The map detail is sparing and most of it seems to be half arsed, though there is a nice little story line and some interesting areas to the modification it seems like most of the time was spent trying to develop the barnacle and less on the maps. Except the prison area, that was a fun little section with some interesting layouts but it still could have done with some extra detail to it just to make it.

Essentially you are a scientist that developed the barnacle, you are captured by the Combine and then conveniently everything goes to fluff whilst your imprisoned and you get to escape and battle your way through the combine forces. The story is simple which is good, and the puzzles are simple.

The combat is standard, loads of combine/ zombies followed by some form of boss that requires you to utilise a bigger gun.

There is very little to say about this mod really, it could have been a lot better with some more time spent on the map. The barnacle does not carry the mod to a easy victory over its players though it is an original and cool add in, but other then that the mod flops.

So I read the blurb before playing the game and its essentially set before Half Life 2 where you have to get the gravity gun to Dr Vance. There is an interesting little bit of dialogue at the beginning (all in text though), which shows you that there is no one left in the village and that you are the only one left. So you creep out of your cave in the side of the cliff and venture forwards into the city to escape.

Now these few maps are excellent, I had a lot of fun playing them, even unlocking one of the achievements (though I don’t know how many there are), but I got the “Antichrist” one which made me smile.

The maps may not be the greatest looking maps but they are a lot of fun to get around, and not too complicated or something that lags down your computer. Just straight to the story maps that have some interesting puzzles and action for you to work your way through.

The maps are very original, you even use the buggy which is something that I haven’t seen in some of the maps/mods that I’ve downloaded, you outrun striders, aircraft and the combine (including some zombies). It wasn’t too hard, though I was stumped for a few moments but I figured it out in the end.

There isn’t anything bad about this map though, apart from the fact that every time a drop ship dropped off combine, the pod that the combine came in just remained where it was. Oh and there was one part with a sniper where I blew them up and then I could walk around that part of the map and there wasn’t anything to stop me.

Explosion is exactly what it says on the filename. It is a map with one hell of a lot of barrels, someone from the combine pressed too many ‘0’s in their order of explosive barrels. One stray shot and you can blow yourself away easily, I almost did it. I came across some friends and opened a door and the combine fired a shot which detonated these barrels behind me. Needless to say my entire backup team were whipped out and I was left with 40 health and loads of combine.

If you want to watch a chain reaction of barrels rip through combine forces then this is your kind of map. It is amusing to watch my pistol take out so many troops and watch their corpses just fly around the map.

Anyhow away from the mass destruction of the combine to some analysis of the map. Overall it was good, it wasn’t realistic in any particular sense but it was fun and perhaps if you wanted something as fun as that you probably could not do it in a realistic fashion. The one problem with it is that I got to a certain point and then there was nothing else to do. I was completely lost for where I was supposed to be going and just ran around the map for a few minutes trying to find some combine to lead into a stack of barrels and watch them fall on him and blow him up. But alas I could not find one and couldn’t find an end point to make me feel like I wasn’t missing something. But what it missed was that end point, either that or I couldn’t find it.

Now it might have been my computer but when there was a large number of barrels exploding it slowed my game down, which I think may put a bit of pressure on those who have slower computers then mine. Even though it was amusing to watch the combine get thrown left right and centre in framed slow motion.

I enjoyed the map and I think I got from it what was intended from it. Extreme explosions.

So this is single map named Rebel Cache. It is set during Half Life 2 like and untold chapter of the game. And to be honest this would make a fun little Easter egg that would be cool if you could find it during the game and play it. But it would have to go through some fixes first.

The map was short and fun but badly textured. Not in the way that you had textures that didn’t match it was that there may not have been any cube maps. Half of the map seemed to be either bright white or its actually intended texture colour, though it was more the former then the latter. Which is a shame because the map was well made, and was fun for as long as it lasted. The map was very straight forward and very simple, it didn’t try to over do itself with some fancy happenings or some detailed story line. It did well and despite the fact that the rooms were badly textured and perhaps some of the actual rooms seemed to be badly detailed I recommend you play it.

I was a bit confused about this mod when I downloaded it. I was very unsure of what was going on, and I am still am confused about it. From what I can tell its mankind versus machines where you attack some building to destroy some base.

Now I fire up the modification and I am greeted by a background from Half Life 2. Even the title of the mod on the main menu is just a collection of weapons. I assume that perhaps the font file wasn’t included in the zip file. Perhaps that could be stuck in the next version.

Anywho I loaded up the first map and got playing. The map was well made, very detailed but I think to an extent where it was over detailed and it made it hard to distinguish what was going on. But the mod brought some entirely new models, all the guns are different, there are no Half Life 2 models. Your friends look like spin-offs of combines. The enemy are giant robots which have the sounds of zombies and tripods which are good but I think some custom sounds might make it, the pistol has even been relocated to the left hand. And the crowbar has been replaced by some Predator type claw thing. Also when I scrolled through the weapon images they still have the old weapon images from Half Life 2. But the weapons look awesome and have some brilliant animations on them. Though I never got to fire the rocket launcher on it (shame…), I was too busy wondering if the absence of enemies at that point in the game might mean that perhaps I was going to go up against a whole enemy.

Though there was quite a lot of action, most of the game is played climbing this structure and taking on some dog robots that have the same sounds of the speed zombie. After you get so far up you kind of stop finding enemies to fight. And when your at the final point and entering in some codes to do something you are not even pushed attacked under it. Making whatever you are doing very easy, which is a shame really. As most of the map is very hard to figure out and there is little action so if you cannot figure it out you will probably just close down the mod.

There was no voice acting in it, you did start off with an Alyx type character trying to tell you what to do but it was all with screen text. But despite this most of the mod was empty of story or at all a clear one. From what I can tell you were just someone who worked their way through a machine processing plant and blew it up. But it might not have been a building plant it might have been the future Mc Donald’s food dispensing unit. There was no real drive to destroy this construction other then that’s all you could really do.

So over all, although an aesthetically pleasing map (apart from the last map which just seemed to be thrown together very quickly), the mod was quite a let down. Perhaps if your going to work on fixing bugs you could make some improvements on them.
